An Import Approval Permit is Required
The Australian Government via Australian Customs regulates the importation of vehicles into Australia.
Every vehicle or trailer or motorcycle imported must have an Import Approval provided from the Department of Infrastructure, transport, Regional Development and Local Government in Canberra.

DO NOT IMPORT A VEHICLE INTO AUSTRALIA BEFORE OBTAINING A VEHICLE IMPORT APPROVAL
There are restrictions related to the importation of cars that have a build date after the 31st of December 1988.
That means if you are wanting to import a vehicle built after 1989 you need to import a vehicle via the RAWS scheme. Agian you can find information via the DOTARS website.
